Wolong Energy Systems Co., Ltd. was awarded the "Most Investable Startup in China's Energy Storage Industry for 2023" at the fifth Energy Storage Carnival held in Shanghai on March 27. The company's Deputy General Manager, Chen Yusi, delivered a keynote speech titled "High Safety, Easy Maintenance Solutions for Large Scale Energy Storage Systems," highlighting the Wolong Energy System's serial energy storage system.
With the global carbon peak and carbon neutral goals driving accelerations in energy structure reforms, energy storage markets are experiencing explosive growth. However, safety concerns are becoming increasingly severe, causing it to be a focus of attention. Wolong Energy has developed a one-cluster-to-one-controller design that emphasizes module control and thermal management technology to solve issues caused by long-term operations. This design has led to a high level of safety, balance, efficiency, and ease of maintenance throughout the system's life cycle.The serial energy storage system achieved high levels of safety by using a one-cluster-to-one-controller method that eliminates direct current coupling and current convergence between clusters. This design protects the battery system by quickly cutting off the DC circuit when an anomaly occurs in a single battery cell or battery pack, preventing chain reactions. The system's design, where the power conditioning system and battery packs are integrated, subject to actual charging and discharging testing before leaving the factory, increases system security, and reduces field installation and commissioning time.
Increased balance has been achieved by using the one-cluster-to-one-controller method, with no circulation inside the cluster, where each cluster is independently controlled to ensure that any SOC difference between clusters is less than 1.5%. Compared with centralized storage systems, the modular system has an efficiency, high cycle life, and increased utilisation of up to 3%-6%.The design's high temperature consistency guaranteed the battery system's temperature uniformity by adopting a liquid cooling scheme. The battery box underwent a 0.5C charging and discharging test, with the highest and lowest temperature differences between positive and negative electrodes being 2.1℃ respectively, increasing the cycle life of the battery system.
